This past week starting Monday April 28 and ending Sunday May 4 was the annual Wells Fargo Championship held at the Quail Hollow Club in the lovely Charlotte, NC. This is a great event for all golf enthusiasts that also raises money for a great charity. The majority of proceeds go towards supporting the educational foundation TEACH FOR AMERICA. Which is a national corporation of exceptional, recent college graduates who agree to commit to two years of teaching in underserved urban and rural public schools. Charitable contributions have climbed as high as $16 million over the last 11 years.
About the Course
The Quail Hollow Club was designed by George Cobb and founded by James J. Harris in 1959. The private member’s club first opened its doors in 1962 but has been host to this particular tournament since 2003. The course is currently 7,442 yards and plays to a par of 72 thanks to a redesign of the greens by Tom Fazio and is one of the toughest courses visited by the PGA Tour each season. The PGA tour returned to the course in 2003 after the redesign and the PGA championship will be held here in 2017. This will set the Quail Hollow Club on course for being listed among the other major golf courses around the US.
Recap of the Results
The top 5 winners at this year’s Quail Hollow Club were J.B. Holmes, Jim Furyk, Martin Flores, Jason Bohn, and Justin Rose. Jim Furyk was a previous champion but skipped last year due to not having his “head in the right place.” This year, however, he came back and finished in second place playing a bogey-free round and going par-par-par on the closing holes.
J.B. Holmes, on the heels of two brain surgers in 2011 that threatened both his golf career and his life, came back to the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club this year ready to win. He’s also endured a broken ankle and elbow surgery which also worked against him. The setbacks weren’t enough to stop him however since he birdied hole numbers 10 and 11 to take back the lead from Furyk. Things got interesting, however, on the final hole when Holmes hit the ball too far to the right and into the pines. He hit a nearly perfect second shot, however, landing it on the green and putting for par.
The weather for this year’s Wells Fargo Championship was a beautiful, sunny 75 degrees and was an enjoyable time for all who attended. No one enjoyed it as much as Holmes, however, who overcame numerous odds to take home the Wells Fargo Championship trophy along with $1.242 million. It was a memorable end to an eventful week.
