Before the kids head back to school and vacation time draws to a close, get out and about in Charlotte. This August, there are a ton of fun things to do that include all members of the family, and when you consider the quirky holidays this month features, you’ll have even more reasons to get out and love Charlotte. 1. Carowinds Amusement Park
What better way to celebrate National Roller Coaster Day on August 16th than by visiting an amusement park? Located just 15 minutes from uptown Charlotte, Carowinds Amusement Park has a number of thrilling rides to experience, from traditional rides to unconventional coasters. The Fury 325 is Carowinds’ newest ride, reaching 325 feet into the air with speeds of 95 miles per hour. Family rides as well as rides for children are also available for those who may not like the feeling of their stomach dropping. Enjoy water rides like WhiteWater Falls with the family, or take the kids to Planet Snoopy to experience the carousel and Peanuts Pirates. There’s something for everyone at Carowinds!
2. Carolinas Aviation Museum
August 19th is National Aviation Day! This day is celebrated on Orville Wright’s birthday, considering that he and his brother were the “first in flight” in North Carolina. To celebrate National Aviation Day, visit the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte. Exhibits here feature Commercial, Civil, Military, and Helicopter aviation. The Carolinas Aviation Museum also offers educational camps and programs. The museum features a library for research, flight enthusiasts, and members. The museum also has space for private events, meetings, and parties. Experience the history of aviation this National Aviation Day at the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte.
3. Experience a Poetry Slam
National Poets Day is August 21st! Whether you write poetry or just enjoy reading it, stop by Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center on 130 North Tryon Street in Charlotte. This theatre will feature the SlamCharlotte Poetry Slam this August 21st to celebrate National Poets Day. SlamCharlotte is a team of those who perform spoken word poetry. The featured artist at this event is Dasan Ahanu, a public speaker from Raleigh who also performs music, writes poetry, and was recently named recipient of the Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellowship at Harvard. This event is not recommended for children due to its adult language and content.
4. Women’s Equality Day Celebration
August 26th is National Women’s Day, celebrating the certification of the Nineteenth Amendment. Join the celebration of women’s right to vote this day at the Levine Museum of the New South on 200 E. 7th Street in Charlotte. This event is free of charge and held by The Mecklenburg County Women’s Advisory Board. The focus for this year is Domestic Violence and Mental Health: “More than Survivors: Out of the Shadows, Into the Light.” A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. and the event begins at 6:30 p.m. Please RSVP at 704-236-8584.
5. Visit a Dog Park for National Dog Day
August 26th is also National Dog Day! Even if you don’t have a pooch to take out that Wednesday, it’s a great day to consider adopting or just to enjoy the local dog community in Charlotte. Come to Frazier Park in uptown Charlotte with your dog this National Dog Day. Frazier Park features fenced-in areas for big and little dogs, so you can socialize your pooch with those of his or her size. Davie Dog Park, located at 4635 Pineville-Matthews Road in Charlotte, is also a great place to visit this National Dog Day. With five acres, fenced-in and off-leash areas, and separate spaces for large and small dogs, you’ll be able to customize your dog’s playtime at Davie Dog Park. This park also has plenty of trees so your dog can lounge in the shade and it even has places to swim. Your dog will love this park!
