School is out, summer has officially begun, and families everywhere are taking advantage of the warm weather in Charlotte. Whether you live in the Queen City or you are just visiting with the family, there are plenty of fun summer activities in Charlotte for all ages to enjoy. From music festivals to interactive museums, we’ve rounded up a few events for the entire family to enjoy this summer!
Take Your Kids to a “Sprayground”
Looking for a free and fun activity this summer for the little ones? Charlotte has many spraygrounds—or, playgrounds with sprinklers and fun waterworks—that can help your family escape from the brutal heat while having a blast at the same time. Charlotte’s sprayground hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and run from Memorial Day through Labor Day. You can find spraygrounds at the following parks in the Queen City:
- Veterans Park
- Latta Park
- Nevin Park
- Cordelia Park
Learn Something New
Keep their minds sharp this summer by taking your kids to one of Charlotte’s excellent museums and exhibits. If the activities below don’t appeal to you, families can get into Charlotte’s Mint Museum for free from June 22nd to August 1st!
Exhibit of Presidential Memorabilia
When: Now until July 29, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Bank of America Heritage Center in Founders Hall
With the presidential election coming up, this exhibit will be interesting for both adults and the kids. This free event allows you to get a glimpse at priceless presidential artifacts including a bank check signed by James K. Polk and 19th century linen funeral banners of George and Martha Washington.
The Solar System: A Journey of Exploration
When: Now until July 31st during regular museum hours.
Where: The Schiele Museum of Natural History
Venture across the solar system and explore the planets through hands-on, interactive touchscreens and simulated Mars colonies! This is a family-friendly exhibit that you won’t want to miss.
The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD at ImaginOn
When: Now until September 11th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: ImaginOn: The Joe and Joan Martin Center
This summer exhibit from ImaginOn is a new interactive and educational adventure that takes families from underwater explorations to outer space led by the much-loved MR. POTATO HEAD.
Catch Some Live Entertainment
The Queen City is full of live entertainment for everyone to enjoy! Check out these family-friendly concerts and theater performances happening this summer:
River Jam Concert Series: Every Thursday and Saturday from now until September, this weekly concert series by the U.S. National Whitewater Center will feature talented bands for your friends and family to enjoy. Check out the lineup here!
The Wizard of Oz: Take the family to see this classic on July 5-10th, presented by Blumenthal Performing Arts at Belk Theater!
Music Box Lunch Series: Now through August 5th, enjoy a free lunchtime performance of solo artists or small groups while enjoying the beautiful scenery at Romare Bearden Park.
